Glitnir in Norse mythology
Established in 1904, the bank was first known as Íslandsbanki. The name Glitnir was chosen in 2006 to reflect our wider Nordic tradition and to distinguish a new era of growth and expansion.
In ancient Norse mythology, Glitnir (meaning shining) is the beautiful palace where Forseti, the God of justice, peace and truth, holds court.
Glitnir is a place of true justice where disputes are always settled, highly symbolic of the importance of dialogue as a way to resolve conflict in the best Scandinavian tradition.
